It's equally sad to watch the Israelis completely overreact with a disproportionate use of force.

Oh, really? The Arabs are free to attack, and if they kill a couple of Soldiers, and kidnap a few, Israel should only be allowed a "tit for tat?"

Do you know why we still have this problem in the ME? Because we and the Euros have never allowed Israel to win a war. They were winning in '48, '67, and '73 and we forced them to stop short of making the Arabs capitulate.

If Israel had been free to finish off Egypt and Syria in any of those wars, and force them to sign a peace treaty and have no significant military from that point on, there would not be a problem.

We certainly forced the Germans and the Japanese to the table. And that ended it for them. But the Arabs know they can attack and attack and never have to pay a price for it.

Just to mention the obvious, as it seems to need mentioning, this is not a show of force. This is a war. Hizbullah has been preparing for this war for six years. It is their entire raison d'etre. Hizbullah has boasted for six years that they made the Israelis run away, Israel is like a spiderweb that crumbles as soon as you hit it.

Israel is fighting to disprove the point. They have used restraint and "proportional" respones many times before. It didn't work. So Israel reacted the Hizbullah's last act of war with a war. That's the risk you take when you commit an unprovoked act of war - the other guy may decide to take you up on it.
