Then why do they have democratic elections in Iran?

The elections are not exactly totally "free and fair". More importantly the people elected only get a degree of power. The Mullah's have power whoever is elected, and the religious courts are not answerable to the elected government.

You mean the mullahs play the role that Karl Rove plays here?
