I think we need to realize that gay marriage is ultimately going to be settled by legislatures and not courts. All the recent court rulings point in that direction, even recent rulings in Massachusetts, as well as in such liberal states as New York and Washington.

So this is going to be a battle to win public support.

In that arena, it's more about images, salesmanship, public relations, and what the polls show.

So in that sense events like this do matter.

The gay advocates are not shrinking violets when it comes to pushing their cause, as in releasing the names of citizens who signed petitions perceived as anti-gay marriage. They know how to play hardball.

I think "love" will have little to do with what ultimately happens.
