You may have a position that looks like a compromise, but actually represents the real philosophy and ideology of many of its supporters. A lot of people think that government involvement for social or environmental reasons isn't far off from being right. They might want to give it a nudge one way or the other, and the direction that nudge takes might involve compromise. But the big picture is more directly supported. OTOH while this presents the center as something that exists beyond a compromise between the extremes it also presents a very large center, and a rather vague one. So the idea still might not be very useful.
