Rightly or wrongly, this is the way I see it:

Israel would like to extend its borders to the Litani River in the North and to the Jordan River to the East of it and have all Palestinians repatriated to Jordan. And the US and UK, though not openly avowing support for this apparent scheme, are/will be tacitly in favour of it.

BECAUSE, hopefully with the democratization of Iraq under a friendly regime,

it would be much easier to take on Syria and Iran in the future, thereby ensuring a safe supply of oil and ensuring US hegemony over the entire Middle East and elsewhere, too.

Despite all the Israeli and US claims to the contrary, their desire for empire and oil constitute the prime motivation for the current destruction, displacement of people and civil unrest in the Middle East! They claim they are fighting for freedom and defending themselves. But, beneath the verisimilitude of their noble-sounding claims, they are actually after the grand prize of empire and oil. No wonder all the delays

for the much clamoured for cease fire

and for more options and action in the offing.
