Jamaica Broilers to Build Ethanol Plant

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Broilers Company will build an ethanol plant in the country's central region to tap in to the Caribbean country's growing use of the liquid derived from sugar cane as a substitute for gas, officials said Wednesday.

The company, Jamaica's leading poultry supplier, will begin construction on the US$17 million (euro13.5 million) plant in September. Dedini, a Brazilian ethanol company, will provide construction expertise and equipment, said Christopher Levy, a Jamaica Broilers vice president.

The plant will produce 60 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol a year. It is expected to be operational by May 2007.

"We first came up with the idea to get into the market in January and decided to go ahead with the project after several trips to Brazil," Levy said.

In May, the government began using ethanol in 70 state-owned vehicles to test the product. It hopes using the substitute will help lower Jamaica's fuel bill, which was US$1 billion (euro792.2 million) in 2005, Industry and Commerce Minister Phillip Paulwell has said.

Local gas stations will likely begin selling gasoline containing 10 percent ethanol in June 2007, Paulwell said.

Currently, the state-run Petrojam refinery produces 150 million litters of ethanol a year.
