A sit and go, or SNG, has fewer people and is unscheduled. As few as 5 sit in, though most are either 9 or 10 players. So, the tournament is over in a reasonable amount of time. Of course, you lose a lot of leverage, as you still lose all your money if you lose, but the payoff is only from 10 people if you are in the money. Most of the 5 or 6 player SNGs are over in about 35 to 45 minutes. 9 or 10 player SNGs usually last an hour or so.

Regular tournaments are scheduled for a certain time. The SNGs start up as soon as you get the required number of players. That usually takes a full minute or so on some sites, 5 minutes or so on smaller sites.
