No one really sees this as birthing a healthy viable anything. To stretch the metaphor, we have induced labor when letting nature take its course would have been far better. I disagree. Except for ex-Baathists and victims of unleashed Islamists, the people of Iraq are better off. And I don't think promoting democracy and civil rights and civil liberties is condescending or hubristic. All during the Cold War I despaired because the US backed "strong men" who could stand up to the Soviets regardless of how they treated their own people. That was "realism." I prefer idealism.
