I do not believe there is any solution that will satisfy all factions in the ME. I'd put my money on nuke action. I don't know when, but it will happen. Could be a non-state actor that sets off the powder keg with a suitcase bomb, could be Israel that does it because they get freaked out about some intelligence they receive on their more aggressive neighbors- but I've little doubt it will happen.

My hope is that the rest of the world doesn't get dragged in- and that we will find the vitreous sands of the post nuclear war ME good for something.

Brent Scowcroft, the older Bush's major foreign policy adviser, has a proposal, not unlike the one you outline, in today's Washington Post.
