No, science is not religion. That's like saying "using intelligence" is religion, or "common sense" is religion.
One fundamental difference between science and religion is that science makes predictions that can be tested by experiment (i.e. by experience), and if a scientific explanation is contradicted by experience, it will be abandoned or modified. Religion is not subject to the same correction on the basis of experience. In fact, over time religious "explanations" become more, not less, detached from reality - I refer to the way myths develop.

To have faith in science would be unscientific, since science abjures faith. To expect science to save mankind would be naive, since science is merely a tool, and the way tools are used depends on factors outside of the realm of science.
