Cooperation + tolerance does not require enlightenment. Just humanity. Enlightenment is instantaneous when the "candidate" is ready. It is mainly a matter of giving up one's personal barbarism and surrendering into, and being Lived by the Divine. The solution you describe in the post is a good one, and has certainly been enjoyed by me in the past on a variety of occasions. But as Richard Alpert (now Ram Dass) said years ago, the problem is that you always come down. And also it is not Enlightenment, just a good-view-seat in the Cosmic Mandala, and a little "timelessness" spent in and as the Cosmic Void. Then back to this papier-mache "world". Namaste! Jim
