Lebanon is riddled with guerrillas. Israel has defeated Syria more than once and can do it again. If they attack Syria it'll be a full on assault and Syria knows it and knows they can't win. They couldn't win when they Soviet backing and now they have no meaningful backing. Jordan is as neutral as an Arab country gets. Iraq is occupied by the US and preoccupied with their building civil war. Iran is too far away and has to cross US-controlled air space. If Iran attacks they'll have a war with the US. So, the only country Israel has to defeat is Lebanon. If they take the entire country they can impose their police state tactics on them and go door to door and execute all enemies of the state. The we have peace in that corner of the mideast until Egypt is ready to fight again.
