"The Ironies of 'Spreading Democracy'" by Chimp ... I have always been a major backer of Israeli policies. I thought, however, that the Israelis made a big mistake in aligning themselves with Bush. There was a major swing of Jewish votes in the US for Bush in the 2004 election. This is all now backfiring as we see that religious leaders have populist positions in the Middle East.

This desire for democracy in the Middle East is a sham and a cover for imperialistic policies specifically aimed at Iraq--rationalization on the fly, if you will. US policies have always favored strongarm governments in Latin America. "Spreading democracy" has never been an aim in Latin
America by US governments.

>I wonder if this would be happening if we hadn't helped spread democracy in the middle east<<

Our Bombs in Israel. Our Fighter Planes in Israel.
Golly. Let me think about this for a minute.

I think the causes are complex, which is why the actions seem so pointless. Israel is shook up because their great protector, the United States, is losing the war in Iraq and that was supposed to be their easiest target. At the same time Sharon, the daddy-figure of Israel isn't there to tell them how to respond. Now the neocons of Israel are scared and well armed, and that is a very dangerous combination.
