In other words, without knowing it themselves, the partisans were jealously guarding against anything that might lower their antagonism. Turning up negative feelings, of course, is a good way to make sure your antagonism stays strong and healthy.

That is certainly true all over SI, LOL.

Its not just political partisanship. The idea of confirmation bias has been recognized for some time. If you come to support an idea, you are more likely to pay favorable attention to facts and arguments that support your idea.

This study may show one of the mechanisms behind the bias.
