"Funny the same people who bad-mouth the concept of patriotism and suggest its a bad thing"

She started off with a complaint against ultra-patriotism. In that, I agree. Such is at the heart of fascism. If the country has a healthy and robust political climate, then dissent shouldn't be attacked, it should be encouraged. Else self-examiniation isn't really possible. If dissent, however mild, is attacked like in this case, then totalitarianism is in the cards. It may not happen, but the seeds are there.

Funny the same people who bad-mouth the concept of patriotism and suggest its a bad thing, then bristle over alleged imputations of their "patriotism".

Then bristle over imputations of their "patriotism"? Of course, I bristle. Do you not bristle when you have been intentionally insulted? I bristle when someone calls me a jackass. Do you think I think I am a mule? Of course not. Its the intent behind the words that is the insult.

You agree with Maines that patriotism is a negative thing, but go her one better by bringing up Hitler when discussing it.

Of course, Hitler used patriotism aka nationalism to inspire the German people and get them behind him. That's what the GOP does here in the US. Its a common tool used to get a people in line. I guess you are little sensitive with the Hitler comparison. It would do you well to reread Mein Kampfe and then reread 1984......I'm assuming you've read both once already. You would be surprised at some of the similarities to the present time.
