Historically, occupied natives have been to able to turn the tables on the occupiers. The Chinese did it to the Mongols.

I think you can kind of say the same thing about the Vikings in Ireland.

More recently, the Germans did it to us. The Germans had to suck it up in the beginning by getting zigarettes and Hershey bars for doing small favors. I don't think a pack of Marlboros is going to get you very much in Germany today.

China assimilated the Mongols as much as it forcibly through them off. The Yuan dynasty lost its connection with the other Mongols and became more and more another Chinese dynasty. Than eventually they started mismanaging the country, weakening their armies, overthrowing each other and generally setting themselves up for failure.

The Germans didn't turn the tables on the US and force us out. We didn't go in to Germany with the idea of conquest and ruling Germany. We kicked out the Nazis, helped set up a civilian government and turned things over to them. Some similarities to Iraq but it worked a lot better in post war Germany.
