There is no contradiction there. Screwed-up product happens to the best of suppliers. I wouldn't be surprised if the faulty batteries were discovered early in the run by Apple QA, but there was no backup supplier to go to. So Apple may very well have kept the run going with the intention of replacing the batteries later. The bad batteries have a capacity problem - but they do work well enough for a short while. What's wrong with that, other than the replacement costs come out of the supplier's and Apple's profits? Apple got the MacBooks Pros out the door early - that was more important than the cost of replacement. It's pretty clear that Apple made the right choice in getting the MacBook Pros out early - full steam ahead!
