Lieberman's' support for the Iraq war runs directly counter to a policy where most of his party brooks no opposition.

Actually, that's not true. The party contains a wide array of positions on Iraq. Lieberman's problem with this constituency is that (a) he has put absolutely not distance between himself and Bush on Iraq and (b) he's been voting against serious other stuff for quite some time--helping the Reps get their very bad choices for SC positions, voting in favor of very bad bankruptcy laws, etc.

He may, of course, survive all this. But he's in danger because of a broad variety of things, not simply Iraq.

As for McCain, it may be, this time around, more about weak or badly placed opposition, than about McCain's relative strengths. He's certainly worked hard getting the Falwells on board. I would guess that, should he get the Rep nomination, offer his opponent more than a few arguments.
