we will never know if there is a peaceful solution to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear challenges

My question is, who the heck says that the Bushies actually want peace? This is the gang who lied like crazy to get us into a war. This is the gang who deliberately challenged Iran and NK by calling them the Axis of Evil. This is the gang who who wants to start up SDI and use tactical nukes. This is the gang who (?) want Israel to expand the war into Syria.

It's much more sensible, and we have much more evidence, to assume that the Bushies want war.

If we do not test that proposition, we will never know if there is a peaceful solution to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear challenges — and we will never have allies for a tougher policy if there isn’t.

I thought this proposition was "tested" in 1994 when Carter unilaterally brokered a deal with N. Korea, which they then proceeded to violate.

We certainly permitted Saddam to remain in power after 1991, believing his promises to disarm and no longer be a threat in the region.

And all we got was support to terrorism and the UNSCOM runaround.

I like most of Friedman's thoughts, but it takes two to dance.. And constantly threatening to envelope US cities in nuclear fire is not particularly conduscive to mutual trust.

Hence, the 6 party talks.
