Actually, no. The colonies you are thinking of are mostly colonies that a European country came to rule, but never settled in any numbers. Colonies that came with people tend to stay put - look at Canada, Australia and the USA.

Yeah, the deciding factor on the survival of the "colony" may be whether the newcomers outnumbered the existing population. Regardless, as usual, Israel doesn't really fit in with either category!
