You can win. You can stop using the coercive power of the state in matters that don't really concern you, in the furtherance of limiting the actions of your fellow citizens. You can make a fairly rational argument either way on the capital punishment issue. If you are going to use the power of the state one would hope you had a really compelling reason to use it. That's the whole point. More compelling then, "Because I said so." One hopes that isn't the rationale for favoring the death penalty.
