Most of the people being hurt are not Hezbollah.

I understand that. But you don't send Baker over to negotiate with the victims. What is it about that you don't get? If you want to negotiate to stop the bleeding, you negotiate with the shooters, not the victims.

I understand Israeli anger at Hezbollah, but in order to stop the bleeding we have to negotiate with Israel and to a lesser extent the legitimate government of Lebanon.

That makes no sense.

If there were two rival gangs shooting it out in a neighborhood and there was collateral damage, with whom would Baker negotiate? Gang A and gang B? Or Gang A and the super of the apartment complex where a little girl who was shot sleeping in her apartment? You want to do the latter. That makes no sense.

That is the problem that you and your authority figures do not understand.

Me and my authority figures? Where did that come from? I'm trying to communicate Cease Fire 101 to you--the people doing the shooting are the ones that have to do the ceasing. I'm not siding with anyone or relying on any authority. My premise coming into this was that negotiation was not useful in this case because there was nothing that could be offered that would deter the principals. You insist on negotiation and I challenged you to come up with something that could be offered that would deter the shooters. Not only have you come up with nothing, you seem to have lost track of the question.

So I'm resting my case that sending Baker is pointless.

We do live on different planets.

Indeed. On mine things need to make sense.

Israel is causing most of the bleeding. We have to ensure the safety of Israel. I don't disagree with that , but Israeli activity is not helping matters. I agree, Israel is one of the principal actors in all this, but Hezbollah is not.

We have two shooters, Hezbollah and Israel. How can you ensure the safety of Israel if you don't even consider the party that is shooting at them a principal? That is bizarre.

Were the assassins of Archduke Franz Ferdinand the principals in WW1? Were they at signing of the armistices ending WW1?

Of course not. But they were principals in the shooting of the Archduke. If and when this skirmish between Hezbollah and Israel turns into WWIII, then no, Hezbollah may not be at the table any more than the assassins were, but right now Hezbollah and Israel are the principals because they're the ones doing the shooting. We can validate that by the simple recognition that if they were to both agree to peace, the bleeding in question would stop. Duh.
