when it became economically inviable

That wouldn't have been till the 1920's through the 1950's. Just think by avoiding the civil war, instead of having a civil rights era in the 50's and 60's, we could have had an anti-slavery campaign instead.

One point re. the north and slavery - the Fugitive Slave Act and Dred Scott decision put the country on the path to the whole country being slave territory. After all, if a slave owner could move out of the south, take his slave with him, and keep him in slavery (as Dred Scott's owner did), that effectively made slavery legal throughout the whole country. Course, this is part of the reason a major political party - the Republican party - with an anti-slavery plank in its platform was formed.
