A great movie on the subject is "They Might Be Giants," with Kirk Douglas. It concentrates on the war, but a lot of the politics seep in. Douglas, a retired US Army Colonel, illegally enters Palestine and teams up with Yigal Allon, the first great Israeli (as opposed to Israelite) hero. The thing that surprised me was I didn't realize that The Arab Legion was led by a British General, and they vowed to destroy Israel. The British also teamed with the Egyptians in 1956, but were talked down by Ike.

BTW, the US Colonel, Mickey Marcus, was a real person and not Jewish.
