re: We don't know what will result, but free and open democratic countries with a willingness to work with the West seems to be extremely optimistic...

I would argue with that. But it's hard to read between the lines.

To me it's all in the premise, and then in the execution. I don't think you can remake the balance in the ME with war. It's a gradual process and our best weapon is our prosperity. The same way we defeated communism... there are only what, 5 communist nations left? Laos, Vietnam, Cuba, China and <???>. Note that we have been militarily involved in try to change several of those... and they endure against the trend.

And the damn execution... destroy the fledgling democracy in Lebanon to promote change? Sacrifice the first born? I don't see anything good coming of all this... just a lot of really bad stuff. We are not seducing the region to change we are trying to create change by rape.

And damn, you agree with him (I think) on Israel/Lebanon! "

Let me just say I am conflicted. I think Israel has the right to defend themselves and Hezbollah has been needling them for years. Initially, they had isolated the south and were moving in troops for house to house. That sends the message that Hezbollah and by extension Iran and Syria can't protect them.

I'm sorry, CJ; Israel isn't defending itself its destroying a nation. Because two Israelis got kidnapped, it gets the right to create a 18 mile buffer in another country? I don't think so.

The Israelis forced the birthing of Israel down the throats of the Arabs and the world. Sixty years later, they are surprised that they are under attack? Israel was a mistake. Its a venture that has failed. What are they going to dowhen Israeli Arabs are the majority......expell them to the West Bank? None of this makes any sense......and its costing the US a small fortune both in money and in prestige.
