To: Sully- who wrote (21970 ) 8/4/2006 6:44:41 AM From: Sully- Respond to of 35834 NED'S NUTCASES NEW YORK POST Editorial August 4, 2006 It's not looking good for Joe Lieberman in next Tuesday's U.S. Senate primary in Connecticut: Anti-war wing-nut Ned Lamont has opened up a double-digit lead in the polls over the three-term incumbent and is pulling away fast. It's yet another sign that the Democratic Party is rapidly being taken over by its Michael Moore-Howard Dean wing, fueled by opposition to the war in Iraq and, in general, utter contempt for anything and anyone to the right of Barbra Streisand. Lamont in particular has been propelled by the far-left blogosphere, whose patently obnoxious methods were on display this week - and led its favorite candidate to demonstrate how disingenuous he truly is. Anyone who surfs the Web no doubt saw the Photoshopped image of Lieberman in classic minstrel-show blackface that was created by Jane Hamsher, a Hollywood producer (Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers"), contributor to the Huffington Post and one of Lamont's most fervent backers. Lamont tried to dismiss the episode by claiming "I don't know anything about the blogs" and insisting that Hamsher is not on his campaign staff. But it turns out that she might as well be. She's raised money for Lamont. She travels with Lamont as part of his personal entourage (together with his wife and campaign manager). She has been involved in his campaign commercials and photographed his video blog. And when the Lamont campaign asked her to remove the offensive post, she was quick to comply. But over-the-top Hollywood zealots are hardly the most troubling aspect of Lamont's candidacy. Because if it's true that a man is known by the company he keeps, Connecticut Democrats should take a long, hard look at who's been making the campaign rounds lately with Joe Lieberman's challenger. In recent weeks, Lamont has campaigned several times with Rep. Maxine Waters of California, perhaps best-known for cheering on the Los Angeles rioters in the wake of the 1992 Rodney King verdict. Six years later, Waters publicly apologized to Fidel Castro for supporting a resolution demanding that he extradite fugitive Joanne Chesimard (a k a Assata Shakur), who shot two New Jersey state troopers, one fatally, and fled to Cuba after escaping prison. He's also campaigned with Rep. Marcy Kaptur, a frequent critic of Israel who has taken a soft line on anti-Israel terrorism. Just two weeks ago, both Kaptur and Waters voted "present" - refusing to take a position - on a resolution condemning Hezbollah's attacks and supporting Israel's "right to defend itself." (The measure passed the House by a resounding 410-8 vote.) This week, Lamont gleefully stumped with the twin titans of race-baiting politics, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. (Lieberman, it's worth noting, was a civil-rights activist himself in the South in the '60s, a claim few other members of Congress can make.) Hmm. If Joe Lieberman must be beaten, as the extreme left demands, because he's too cozy with conservatives, shouldn't Lamont be judged by the people who've been surrounding him? Waters, for one, has been exhorting Nutmeg State Democrats that a Lamont win "can help change the direction of the Democratic Party." Which is precisely the point: The far left is looking to this race to spearhead its efforts to take control of the party. While it would be nice to see the Democrats finally acknowledge the direction in which their party is headed, it would be sad if such a principled legislator as Joe Lieberman got tossed out in the bargain.nypost.com
