Well, using marriage as the term for 'legal recognition of status', who other than the State could make it legal?

If you happen to live somewhere where a body other than the state declares what is legal, then that'll be the body you go to when you're formalising your marriage.

We don't have many of them in the West, but the obvious example is (or was) a captain at sea - authorised to legally declare marriage. And even then he's representing the country and its legal establishment.
But I doubt many in southern Afghanistan go to Kabul to get their marriages signed off, for example. So, no state there. Same goes for the tribal zones in NW Pakistan.

That's a funny question.

Many people ask it who support same-sex marriage although same-sex marriage minded folks already have the state out of their personal affairs. There is nothing stopping same-sex people from living together as married, having a ceremony they call a wedding - the only thing they are missing now is state recognition. So why would people who want the state not involved in marriage want to change the current situation for same-sexers?

And why don't people who want the state uninvolved in marriage simply dissolve their marriages and teach their children to never marry? Nothing is stopping them. They have it in their hands to accomplish for themselves what they say they want - getting the state out of their marriage and their families marriages.

May I ask: Are you married? And what is your opinion of same-sex marriage?
