(AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter and his vice president, Walter Mondale, are teaming up again - this time at a fundraiser to help the Nevada bid of Carter's son, Jack, to defeat a Republican U.S. senator with a huge edge in campaign cash. "It will be a real bit of old Americana," Jack Carter said of the event scheduled Friday in Minneapolis. Democratic fundraisers Sam and Sylvia Kaplan are hosting the event at their home on the Mississippi River. Jack Carter said many of those invited are part of "a core group" of contributors to Democratic candidates. He didn't name names, but said he hoped to get a "significant" infusion of money to add to the $1.1 million he had raised through late July. Carter is challenging first-term Republican Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who has reported campaign contributions of about $5.2 million. Ensign ended the April-June quarter with $3.3 million in the bank. Carter had $482,000 in cash on hand then, and now he's down to about $380,000. Jack Carter said the fundraiser is being held in Minnesota because that's where Mondale lives. Mondale, 78, is senior counsel at a Minneapolis law firm, where he specializes in issues involving Asian finance and government. Mondale told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that a couple of thousand invitations were sent out, with suggested per-person donations of $250 or $500.
