By the time of the Civil War, its unlikely there were any "grandfather clause" slaves left around...

Certainly not as many as in the South, but there were some left. Not to mention the ones that were essentially disappeared as "permanent servants".

Grant lived on a farm west of St Louis.

Grant owned the slave BEFORE he moved to St. Louis.

Which ones thought it was a good idea?

Reread the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and tell me again what the Founding Fathers thought of slavery.
