"Contrary to the conventional wisdom, Hezbollah is principally neither a political party nor an Islamist militia. It is a broad movement that evolved in reaction to Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in June 1982."

I guess Israel felt that Hezbollah didn't have enough support in Lebanon, and wants to see them win elections and control the country, as with Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah has the new government of Iraq solidly behind them. It's as if Israel caught dumb from Bush!

Curious that Pape needs to use so many words when his message can be summed up in one: Surrender.

"What these suicide attackers — and their heirs today — shared was not a religious or political ideology but simply a commitment to resisting a foreign occupation."

-------

Which is what that study over 25 years of successful suicide bombers the world over showed. It's a military tactic in assymetric warfare and it's successful about 50% of the time. It is also a great deal cheaper, both in terms of human lives and money, than the bigger enemy.

The rightwing, and the media to boot, refuse to acknowledge reality which is why the US and Israeli militaries go in so gung ho, hit the wall of the real world and have to hem, haw and back down time and time again.

If they don't understand what is going on, how can they make any progress?
