"Therefore my point is, it would benefit a charlatan, or a salesman, or an honest newsletter writer to prefer a booming, interesting market. If the market is not interesting, then a snake-oil salesman would create or fabricate a reason to keep people interested. Something like "We don't discuss the stock market timing on the radio, but only in the newsletter". Now this same fraud may misrepresent his successful ratings, and, if he was really a crook, he would ignore or forget to talk about some calls."

That proves you really are a brilliant pig.

A really good snake oil salesman might find a way to make a newsletter that only recommends fixed income to sell people in these "secular bear periods" so his Hulbert ranking would not be tarnished for under performing equities. If I was that type, I'd go into business with Jas Jain and sell one wildly bullish newsletter and one Jas Jainly bearish newsletter so we'd always have one to advertise!

Congratulations on post # 23,000!
