Strange year for salmon just about everywhere Annie. Nothing really consistent, fish are one place one day, somewhere else hours later. Right place right time you do well, pick wrong, you're screwed.

Just spent 16 days fishing Nootka Sound on the west coast of this island. 3-20 miles out on the banks the fishing was great for the bigger boats. Inside waters spotty. We had 6 boats there, LOL and 6 days of heavy rain to start. After 7 days, those 6 boats had accounted for only two big Chinook and a few Coho, all wild....normally we're all home or on our way home with limits after 7 days.

I went 11 days without a big salmon when in past years my boat has outfished the whole group and we leave 1-5 days earlier than the rest...not this year. We did load up with ling cod, black bass and hooked a zillion Pacific Mackeral and dozens of large dogfish...what a pain. Those 11 days we were averaging 12-14 fishing hours a day, sometimes even more.

My first, on the 12th day was a good one though, a 37lb hen that was supercharged, first run was almost 375 yards and into the backing.

I might not have got the most this year, but I did get the largest...hehe, again. Only brought back 6 totalling 130.1lbs and with 3 licenses, my limit was 12.

Would have stayed longer, but everything broke...sounder, GPS chart plotter, engine problems on day 15, trailer, tent, a tooth and more...

Of course now the whole Sound has heated up big time, so much so that there's a short commercial opening in 10 days...cool thing is Fisheries has put in their notice a warning to the commercial guys to take it easy and not make big wakes that disturb the sport guys when they run through.
