You can't with less than $1.5million net worth invest directly in a hedge fund that takes incentive fees in the US ("Qualified Investor"). There are fund of fund products you can invest in. Hedge funds aren't the only investments limited to Accredited Investors ($1 million net worth on $200k income for individual, $300 k for couple).

With electronic systems we now have there isn't much rationale from the hedge fund's side to limit small investors. They can still keep the lockup period. Not sure that large investors are less fickle than small investors :)
