I figure that, since the Atlantic is cooler this year and the number of predicted hurricanes has declined, the anti-global warming crowd will be out in force saying they told everyone so.

Possibly, but I believe public perception will be more driven by the heat waves we're had this summer. Those who are more inclined to detail will be more interested in the average global temperature for the year. But that is only going to be one data point on a scatter chart.
