Gaza was a hat trick. Everyone knows this.

Israel gave back land in Lebanon and Gaza.

Israel, after 18 years, gave back land in Lebanon, finally complying with the UN resolution to do so. Israel gave back Gaza because it wasn't worth the cost of protecting the settlers there.

the Palestinians don't want it

As I recall, the Palestinians, under Arafat, made a good faith effort to follow the Mitchell plan. For 16 mos. there were no attacks on Israel, while during that time Israel violated the plan by expanding settlements into the West Bank and refusing to provide better water to the Palestinians. After Barak was defeated, hopes for a state began to die, but even so the intifada didn't begin until Sharon violated the grounds of the Dome of the Rock.

I believe Israel has always had a goal of reclaiming all Biblical lands....all of Palestine, all of Lebanon, part of Syria and I think part of the Sinai. Barak was willing to actually grant statehood and then was voted out of office.

Hi Nadine Carroll; Re: "Israel gave back land in Lebanon and Gaza. Did the Pals regard this a step in the right direction, or a sign of weakness? You tell me."

The Arabs in general saw it as both a step in the right direction and as a sign of weakness. By the way, do you remember me lecturing you on the fact that building a wall would simply result in the Palestinians throwing things over the wall? And that Israel would never have peace, but that the best she could hope for was ups and downs? You were so sure that Israel had the terrorism problem licked.
