"Liberal" is an outdated word. Most democrats have grown far beyond the old definition of "liberals". In fact there are only a few left who fit that mold. Although many liberal principles are still righteous and sound.

Democrats are now mostly centrist-progressives or left of center progressives. They are fiscally conservative, common sense pragmatics, not reactionary, smart defenders of the country, not extremist on any issue, bi-partisan at least with honest conservatives and GOP moderates and truly value peace, a cleaner environment and sustainable prosperity. They believe the government can be run efficienty and honestly and can solve many of our problems, especially in partnership with private enterprise.

No political movement is perfect, but centrist-progressive democrats now best represent the USA, and have proven they can run the government very efficiently. See the 1990's as opposed to Bush's years when our government has become dysfunctional and hemmoraging borrowed money.
