Expect that BPT, the BP royalty trust may also be hit.

These stocks might get hit hard by shorts tomorrow.

XOM, COP, CVX, FST, and BP.

Why?
This is just another threat to oil supply. When this happens (in Nigeria, Iran, etc. or from hurricanes or refinery fires), oil stocks go up, not down. One of the biggest beneficiaries of this outage may be BP, which, thru its ARCO subsidiary, is the largest gasoline retailer on the west coast.

All of the oil from Valdez goes to west coast refineries and there is probably at least six weeks before this would affect refinery operations. Plenty of time to get alternate supply but retail prices will go up long before that.

JMO but I don't see this having a negative effect on oil stocks. They could get whacked immediately but I think they would then rally hard as traders realize this will just mean more revenue for the oil companies.

If oil prices spike then airlines and other energy-sensitive stocks might be better shorts.
