We do have glaring weaknesses -- I am hardly the first or only one to note them. Our current account deficit sums many of them into one number, and given our zero savings rate we rely on the kindness of strangers to bail us out every day of the week. Politically, this is a country that is deeply divided. The party in power panders to its base on major issues like stem cell research while avoiding telling the truth about the tough issues like global warming, the economy and the quagmire in Iraq while the other party fumbles along because it does not have the stomach to take a position on tough issues at all.
