That would be a very bad definition. Any failure would be a "butt-kicking", and before the conflict ends many successful wars would have been considered a butt-kicking against the side that eventually won, because they didn't win right away.

A butt kicking is when you are forced to retire from the field with heavy losses. Where the enemy dominates you, and achieves its objective in a dramatic way, incurring much lower losses than you do. The Iraqi Republican Guard got its butt kicked. The Romans at Cannae got their butts kicked.
