I think the bitrate was increased dramatically in the japanese HD releases so it needed more processing power...Anand tech did say the American releases of HD required less processing power...the next generation AMD and Intel processors probably should take care of this as well as improvements on the video card itself (I guess the Holy grail is 1080p at 60 frames per sec)...

DRM isn't much of a performance issue, in particular HDCP is neither added nor decoded on the software level (it would be much easier to hack that way than it already is).

However VC-1/H.264 AVC/WMV/Sorensen 3 are all higher compressing than MPEG-2 to reduce bandwidth/file size. That does translate to a rather linear increase in decoding computing power, roughly at a factor of 3. It is quite possible to store a 720p version of a 2 hour movie on a standard DVD that way (there are WMV HD versions of about 20 movies on sale as we speak).
