Compare the smoke in the two pictures. In the new version, the smoke is much neater -- two big, nearly identical plumes, rather than a mess of smoke. Can make a difference in whether he gets that photo onto the cover of a newspaper or not. Such is the business...

Probably. Some of the 'doctoring' really isn't. Note that the two photos are cropped differently and the contrast is different. Standard photo work. Why he felt it necessary to add in a little smoke is beyond me.
