Pete,

I think we are arguing apples and oranges here...

My intent was to talk about why a PC or a home theater PC would need so much processing power to decode HD material and you offer links to linux uses of this...

I understand that linux has less overhead compared to the windows operating system...given that information I asked you to read the anand article because I wanted an opinion based on HD decoding based on a windows operating system...

From your statements I have gathered that there is enough processing power if you have a Linux set-up (which the vast majority of users will not use)...what is your qualified opinion on why a regular dual core processor would be maxed out without an additional co-processor (High-end video card with HD processing features)...

My intent was to show that more robust dual core cpu's are necessary if you do not want to expend extra money on a video card that has those features...I wish Anand had used a A64 x2 4800 cpu without the additional nvidia decoding software to see how the framerates were affected on the best HD material out there...if you get a chance and have the time to read the entire article please give a qualified explanation for this phenomena...

My Wag...

(1) Windows operating systems is not as efficient as Linux as you described...

(2) The encoding (compression levels set higher) is different in the Japanese version vs. the American versions of HD material...

(3) Maybe the software content protection schemes are playing havoc with PC system and sucking up resources...

(4) Maybe everyones doing their own thing and the situation between hardware and software is all f*cked up...

:>))))))
