A true flagpole rally starts a little after the open from flat or slightly down pre open futures. Between 9.30 and 10 am the SP futures suddenly explode 10+ points in a straight line in a matter of 15-20 minutes ( the pole ) and then trade flat (-+2 points-"the wind") for the rest of the day creating the flag itself.
This is a true textbook flagpole rally, with an intraday chart resembling a long flag on a pole, with slight ups and downs creating the impression that the flag is flapping in the wind.

Sometimes a "flagpole rally" is used to describe any substantial but forceful, sloppy, careless, bravado buying by Pig Men.
