Not all Muslim extremists are the same. Sunnis and Shias are natural enemies. Iranians are not Arabs. Insurgents in Iraq hate Al Qaida. Iran and Iraq fought a long bitter war. What we don't want is for anti-American hatred to mount so high that all these groups unite against us. Hezbollah and Al Qaida are not allies. Yet. Hezbollah hasn't attacked the US since the 1980's when we invaded their land - Lebanon. I'm not defending them but how would you like it if Iranian Marines occupied whatever city you live in. Would you want to blow them up? We learned far too late that in Vietnam we weren't fighting communists, we were fighting nationalists bwho wanted to kick out invaders. Any and all invaders.
