If I called someone dishonest or self serving, I'd hope I could back it up when called upon to do so, and I am calling upon you to support your own comments. Backing up an opinion, where one relies on actual facts, is not impolite. When I use polite here, I do not mean "nice"- I only mean polite in the sense of using basic civility- those adult social norms which keep most of us from abstaining from name calling and such when we are in public. I think most of us might expect to be questioned, in public (politely), for evidence regarding our opinions- so that is what I am doing to you now- politely asking you to substantiate your opinions.

And just FYI, calling politicians dishonest and self serving is contentious per se. If I called Mr. Bush (and I am NOT calling him this, merely saying "if") dishonest and self serving I have no doubt whatsoever that Bush supporters (and maybe even a few non-Bush supporters who merely deplore antagonism and hyperbole in politics) would find this 1.offensive 2. contentious and 3. that they would demand evidence for the names I had called their man- and they would be right to ask for evidence, do you not think so?

So while opinions do not have to be contentious yours certainly are " This is a polite thread. Differing opinions doesn't have to be contentious. They can just be statements of opinions. "

Since you have bought these contentious opinions here, it would be nice if you could back them up with facts.
