There is no thought police in the IDF.

True

And so every IDF soldier follows their own beliefs, however twisted.

They can think but that doesn't tend to be any more twisted than what other military people around the world think. Whatever they think, they are expected to follow orders, and they usually do. Those orders do not come from the councils.

And especially when you consider their gruesome heartless actions,

If the IDF and Israel's civilian leadership were so gruesome and heartless the civilian death toll in Lebanon and among the Palestinians would be orders of magnitude higher. To only kill hundreds of civilians while intensely bombing an enemy that tends to use civilians as human shields requires extraordinary efforts to avoid civilian casualties. If they just didn't care the casualties would be much higher, and if they where actually aiming for as many civilian deaths as possible the death toll would be staggering.
