I would appreciate a non-snide response as someone who is actually trying to understand

I see, a non-snide response... Well please refer your insult to someone else. I make an effort to return courtesy with courtesy. You're doesn't justify a response.

"how often are the wafers in environments that are completely separate from the operators"

Pretty close to 100% of the time. The wafers ride in boats and the whole thing is inside a pod. The pod rides on tracks through the fab until it arrives at the tool and the tool opens the pod and takes the wafers.

Joe, Re: ...while not knowing as much about semiconductor processing as others on the board, how often are the wafers in environments that are completely separate from the operators, and how often are they exposed to the same environment as the operator?...>

On wafer handling.
