Not to suggest that there aren't more Machiavellian forces afoot, but as happens so often in looking at ME policy and actions by various parties, this piece professes to see the forest, but overlooks the actual trees.

Israel's action against Lebanon can be seen in much simpler terms. They view Hezbollah as a cancer on the state of Lebanon and will not tolerate either a radical state on their northern border nor a government in that state that tolerates the growth of a radical Islamist organization within their borders. So, their objective is not merely the destruction of Hezbollah and ending the influence of Iran on their border, but the creation of a moderate state to the north.

The effect of all this action may well play into the hands of our home-grown warmongers, but Israel does have its own actual agenda.

We can argue forever about their methods.
