On channel 2 in israel and Fox news here, it is being reported that a massive invasion of southern lebanon is now underway. Israeli sources say that hundred of military casualties on the israeli side are expected. They say hizbolla is a fierce fighting force but now that france has once again broken its word on the joint US/France proposed cease fire agreement, israel has no choice but to take out hizbolla and neutralize its rockets which are holding israel hostage. The hope is that within the next hours or days at the worst, a resolution can be arrived at that will specify a multi national force and thus israel can cease this operation. Nazralla apparently is drooling at the prospect of fighting this ground war against israel, at least publicly.

I can see why the wife of the peacekeeper is upset. Personally I'd depend more on the reports from the peacekeeper himself than I would depend on statements made from someone half a world away.

Hi Sarman,
This probably will sound wrong to you but I think the hizbolla provocation if all goes well from here can turn out to be a godsend to both israel and lebanon, if israel takes them out. Who knew how powerful this organization had become and how much weaponry they had stockpiled. The new israeli theater commander calls this the most important war for israel since the War for independence. A few weeks ago, i would have called that crazy talk. Now I am not so sure. Same for Lebanon unless one envisions a Lebanon dominated and controlled by Hizbolla and perhaps just a proxy for iran.
I will still go for the beer and for one five years hence to discuss how this all played out in the end. None of this is written to minimize the tragedy of civilian losses on both sides that have and will continue to occur. But this is a FA thread and I will try to write dispassionately on matters of policy as best i can. Mike

PS Headed off to a wake of all things. Probably wont be back until tomorrow.
