Absolutely illegal, though I think they just made it legal again in France (?). It was sort of an heirloom collectors thing, from pre WWII.

I forget who did the painting The Absinthe Drinker. It was a cafe with a bottle and glass of absinthe on the table... and an empty chair (obvious message is that it killed you).

Now I wish I still had it, I think I read a collector would pay $500 or something.
